A voltage reading by itself does not prove that a battery can start the car. Temperature, recent charging, terminal condition and electrical load all change what the number means.
Inspect before measuring
Look for a loose case, leakage, swollen sides, damaged cables and corrosion. Work safely around battery acid and keep sparks and flame away. Follow the vehicle procedure before disconnecting anything.
Measure rested voltage correctly
A battery recently charged or driven can carry surface charge. Let it rest according to the test procedure and measure directly at clean battery posts with the vehicle off.
Test the ability to deliver current
A conductance or approved load test estimates whether the battery can support starting demand. Enter the correct battery type and rated current; testing an AGM battery with the wrong setting can mislead.
- Record temperature and test standard
- Compare measured performance with the battery rating
- Recharge a low battery before condemning capacity
Check the charging system
With the engine running, observe charging behavior under electrical load and compare it with manufacturer specifications. Modern controlled alternators do not always hold one fixed voltage.
Investigate repeated discharge
If a known-good battery repeatedly goes flat, verify charging, cable voltage drop and parasitic draw. Replacing the battery again may only reset the clock on an unresolved fault.
