A wheel can bolt onto the hub and still be wrong for the car. Clearance at the brake, strut, fender and suspension travel matters alongside bearing load, steering feel and tire compatibility.

Record the factory baseline

Write down wheel width, diameter, offset, bolt pattern, center bore, fastener seat, load rating and original tire size. Photograph the certification placard and measure current clearances.

Understand what offset moves

Offset is the distance between the wheel centerline and mounting face. Changing width and offset together moves both inner and outer edges, so comparing offset alone is incomplete.

Check every clearance zone

Verify brake caliper shape, strut clearance, tie-rod clearance, fender liner, full steering lock and compression travel. A static parking-lot photo does not prove dynamic clearance.

  • Allow for wheel-weight and valve-sensor clearance
  • Check tire section width on the chosen wheel width
  • Confirm snow-chain requirements where relevant

Protect load capacity and fastening

Use wheels rated for the vehicle load and the correct fastener seat and engagement. Hub-centric rings can center an appropriate wheel but cannot correct the wrong bolt pattern or inadequate rating.

Validate after installation

Torque fasteners using the manufacturer procedure, recheck as specified, verify pressure and inspect for contact marks after controlled driving. Follow with alignment when suspension height or geometry changed.
