How we test and recommend
The evidence, comparison rules and commercial boundaries behind Automotive Compass recommendations.

A useful recommendation starts with a job to be done. We define the vehicle, environment, budget and desired outcome before comparing tools, parts or services.
Define the use case
We document who the product is for, the compatible vehicles, the problem it should solve and the conditions in which it will be used. A product can perform well and still be wrong for a particular reader.
Set comparison criteria first
Criteria are chosen before a conclusion. Depending on the category, we may examine compatibility, safety, measurable performance, ease of use, durability, documentation, update policy, warranty, support and total ownership cost.
Evidence levels
Hands-on observations, repeatable measurements, primary documentation and manufacturer claims are identified separately. We do not imply laboratory testing when a conclusion is based on specifications, desk research or limited real-world use.
Compatibility and safety
A recommendation must not hide fitment or procedural limits. Exact vehicle coverage, load rating, electrical requirements, tool access and manufacturer instructions are checked before convenience or price.
How rankings are decided
A “best” choice must be tied to a declared scenario such as best for basic code reading, cold climates or occasional home use. Commission rate, retailer inventory and free samples do not earn a higher position.
Products supplied for review
A sample may be accepted when it improves testing, but ownership of the conclusion remains with Automotive Compass. Suppliers do not receive approval rights. Material sample relationships are disclosed in the relevant article.
Updates and retesting
Recommendations may change when software, pricing, availability, safety information or a competing product changes materially. The modified date reflects substantive review, not an automated freshness edit.
